Whereas the commercial software during the PC boom days during the 1980s was almost ubiquitously implemented in C++, a large amount of development today is being done using the JAVA programming environment. This is an introductory course for people who have some basic experience with computers and would like to learn how to program in the JAVA programming language. This course follows the track of the first-year introduction to programming course at Columbia University which the instructor has previously taught. The student will first be introduced to programming in general and then be taught to implement various JAVA programs, including:

• Basic stateless data conversion/generation utilities
• Object-oriented modules for building large scalable systems
• Simple state machines
• Network-connected client-server systems
• Graphical user interfaces
